In The Dying We Can Heal The Spirit

Dying can be a passage of healing
A mercy…a span of respite
Given both time and the knowledge
To choose how we’ll close out our lives
Others are taken too quickly
Without a chance for “goodbyes”
Not blessed with the choices or moments
That a journey of dying provides
For though it may be fraught with suffering
And deep sorrow we’d wish to deny
Often…it’s there in the dying
That we find the fullness of life
When we give up our hopes for the body
And embrace the “now” and the future still to come
Treasuring each day and each moment
Before our eternal spirit continues on
And as we travel this journey
We understand the paradox within it
For often…it is in the dying
That we finally heal the spirit
We look with gratitude upon all we’ve had
We see the world with a fresh pair of eyes
And we regret not taking more moments
To enjoy all the seasons of life
Daily worries that used to fill our minds
Become so small, that we cannot help but laugh
Seeing them in all their inconsequence
As we find ourselves reflecting back
Family and friends mean nearly everything
We want to spend our final days creating events
That will fill their hearts with sweet memories
Reassuring them of how much their love has meant
The hard words become so simple
More “I love you’s” and “thank you’s” we share
And the hardest words of all…”I’m sorry, please forgive me”
Become so much easier to bear
We don’t want to leave here with anything unsaid or undone
And we bless lives through the attention we give this
For often…it’s through tending to others
We’re given peace and mend our own spirits
We consider what lies beyond this life
Some feel life is a privilege, never to be replaced
While others seek to draw closer to God
Anticipating when they’ll come before his face
And though we won’t have time to arrange everything
We can still have the time to say goodbye
And we realize this blessing
An experience we wouldn’t wish to deny
So through this journey of suffering and hope
We come to know the fullness of life within it
Moving beyond the body…into love that lasts forever
When we finally heal the spirit
